Paul Yoder’s first book, Maryland’s Eastern Shore Historic Churches, is a photodocumentary of 115 churches of the many hundreds of historic churches located in this region by the Chesapeake Bay. This area of Maryland, known as the “Eastern Shore”, is rich in American Colonial history. Some of the oldest churches in the United States are in this area of Maryland.
Since first spending time on the Eastern Shore, attending Salisbury University in 1984-85, Yoder has seen that many churches on the Eastern Shore, have become neglected and forgotten. Some have disappeared or fallen into complete disrepair, through abandonment or vandalism. As a photographer fascinated by both architecture and history, Yoder felt compelled to record these wonderful and historic churches. His hope is that this documentary will assist in preserving individual stories of many of the remaining churches.
This photodocumentary project is informative and pleasing with many beautiful color images as well as black and white images. Along with a basic history of each church, it reveals the beautiful architectural features of these churches.
